WORKDAY2008

"We Love Trinity Workday"

On March 29, a beautiful Saturday morning in spring, over 50 Trinity members--and their pastors--converged at the church to attack three projects which immediately improved the appearance of our campus.

Marc Roberts, Jay Robbins, and David Lyles

Andy Hinson, our resident curmudgeon, posed the project to Wade and the Trustees, saying that "The members of the Trinity family should love their church enough to help take care of it, so why don't we give them an opportunity?"  Wade liked the "We Love Trinity" theme and publicized this workday with this motto.  Although there are many, many potential Trinity-improvement projects, Andy narrowed the scope of this workday down to two:

  • Spruce up the landscaping for "curb appeal"

  • Indoor projects for those who don't like yard work

Turned out, each of these two projects had a couple of elements, and because of the great turnout, we had enough people to get more than two specific projects done.

Outside, the base plantings of the sanctuary and education wing, and several other planted areas were recovered in a thick layer of attractive mulch with Andy's leadership and the procurement of a lot of mulch by David Lyles.  Louis Buettner headed a team of ladies who installed colorful flowers and foliage plants in a series of garden vignettes around the church and education wing.  They even put a row of hardy marigolds along the children's playground.  The streetside curbgutters and the overgrown strip between the rear of our buildings and the alleyway where handicapped parking is located were cleaned up.  Andy and Paul Hinson trimmed all the existing landscape shrubs.

Inside, a team of ladies tackled two projects:  deep cleaning of many of the activities rooms in the education wing (mainly the Sunset Funset Room and the nursery and youth rooms) and the repainting of the church office complex (the reception area and the pastor's office).  Julia Griffith's stepmother, an interior decorator, took a look at the office and made recommendations for its rehabilitation.

Carol Taylor, Carmen Vick and Georgia Buettner

Georgia Buettner led the team of volunteer painters which transformed the dark paneled pastor's office into a handsome green on green space befitting our new pastor.  At day's end, there were portions of the office makeover that are yet to be done:  wood flooring to replace the horribly stained dingy carpet and the repair and painting of the walls of the reception area which also will get new wood flooring.  There will be new window treatment--handsome 2" faux wood blinds--to soften the stark appearance of the aluminum casement windows.

This new Trinity church office will be a much more attractive "front face" to visitors who drop in for information and for members and others who come to Wade for spiritual counseling or church business.  The good part is that a goodly portion of the cost of this make-over is funded by donations.

Like colorful soldiers these marigolds brighten the playground

The new mulch and the spots of color from the new plantings brighten up the Education Wing.

David Lyles had about 10 yards to much mulch delivered, and it was put to good use on the perpetually bare ground that would never grow grass under the big oak of the front lawn.
