As for [seeds] in the good soil, these are the ones, who, when they hear the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patient endurance.                   Luke 8:15

Join The Choir

To those of you who are college age and older and who have a God-given musical talent,  we offer you the opportunity to join the Trinity Choir, a community of people, a fellowship dedicated to the ministry of music and to each other.  It is our goal at Trinity UMC to have both fine music in worship and a warm fellowship marked by growing, lasting relationships of love, all in the name and for the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Whether you have the qualities of a soloist or the modest ability to hold a choral part amidst harmony, there is a place for you.  Follow this link to our choir web to learn more about the musical philosophy of our new Director of Music Ministries and the program here at Trinity.

Special offer to U.A. Students:  Become a member of the choir and eat supper for free on Wednesday Night.

 TRINITY HOMEPAGE

A note from Pastor Ron about this series, "Embracing Emergence Christianity" and his seminar with Phyllis Tickle, the author.

The Great Emergence...

A church was being redecorated and renovated. Members met to discuss the plans for the sanctuary. The plan called for a chandelier in the foyer of the building. One man stood up in opposition to it. He said, “I’m against it. Besides, no one knows how to play the thing.”

We can laugh at such situations, but allowing our ignorance to influence our decisions and the way we live can have harmful ramifications. Countless lives have been taken because people chose to be ignorant of what was going on around them. At the end of World War II, Germans were forced to go to local concentration camps and march past the mass graves and tour the gas chambers. The Allied commanders felt compelled to make sure that the local people understood what their willful ignorance had allowed to take place.

It is imperative that we continue learning and growing. Jesus told His disciples (and us) to be “wise as serpents and harmless as doves.” (Matthew 10:16-- KJV)  Proverbs 1:7 says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” We must learn and grow so that we can be ready to deal with whatever comes our way. We should be aware of what is going on in society and in the church as a whole.

Author, historian and keen cultural observer Phyllis Tickle invites us to join her in examining the changing face of Christianity and culture. Phyllis surveys two thousand years of Western history, identifying the great upheavals that occur in Western culture and Christianity every 500 years. The last was the Protestant Reformation of the 1500’s; the next is happening now.

I will be leading a study on Wednesday nights after our Wednesday night supper in which we will examine the “Great Emergence”. There will be six sessions. We’ll watch a DVD of Phyllis and then have a discussion time.

The title of this study is: “Embracing Emergence Christianity: Phyllis Tickle on the Church’s Next Rummage Sale.”

I had the privilege of spending three or four days with Phyllis on an ICE (Institute for Clergy Excellence) retreat last year. I was astounded at what she shared. I learned so much. What I learned helped me to understand some things that I had witnessed and read about. I also recognized some things going on and being said that I had not paid attention to before. Things that are going on are being influenced by the “Great Emergence.”  My time with Phyllis was truly enlightening.

Make plans to attend this fascinating study on Wednesday nights.

Emergence Christianity

Christianity' s Cultural and Spiritual Emergence

Led by  Rev. Ron McKay

Author, historian and keen cultural observer Phyllis Tickle invites us to join her in examining the changing face of Christianity and culture. Phyllis surveys 2000 years of Western history, identifying the great upheavals that occur in Western culture and Christianity every 500 years.

The last was the Great Reformation of the 1500's; the next is happening now.

What are the implications of this Great Emergence, both culturally and spiritually? What are the key questions and issues that need to be addressed? Where might we be headed next? And, perhaps most importantly, where are you, at this moment? Might you be an emergence Christian?

There are six sessions on the DVD. Each session begins with a video presentation by Phyllis Tickle, lasting from 10-15 minutes. Ms. Tickle's presentation is followed by filmed interaction with a small group. The Participant Workbook then helps your small group join the dialogue in your own setting.

THE SIX SESSIONS:
Session 1: Emergence 101
Session 2: Where Now is the Authority?
Session 3: The 20th Century and Emergence
Session 4, Feb. 8: Gifts from Other Times
Session 5, Feb. 15: How Then Shall We Live?
Session 6, Feb. 22: Hallmarks of Emergence

This Bible study relates the issues of college life -- stress, peer pressures, loneliness, separation, new freedom, conflicting counsel and advice, and more -- to biblical admonition and support

Blue
                          Like Jazz

The current topics are taken from the book, Blue Like Jazz, by Donald Miller who wrote, "I never liked jazz music  because jazz music doesn't resolve . . . . I used to not like God because God didn't resolve.  But that was before any of this happened."

In Donald Miller's early years, he was vaguely familiar with a distant God.  But when he came to know Jesus Christ, he pursued the Christian life with great zeal.  Within a few years he had a successful ministry that ultimately left him feeling empty, burned out, and, once again, far away from God.  In this intimate, soul-searching account, Miller describes his remarkable journey back to a culturally relevant, infinitely loving God.

And this is what Elevate! will try to do for you.  Each week, a different, stand-alone topic from the book is discussed with the end objective of knowing that in all you do and in all you encounter, you have a loving God right there beside you.  You don't need to buy the book or read an assignment before class, nor do you have to attend last week's Elevate! to understand this week's topic.  Come and join the study!

Alternative #2

Look at the options listed above for "Adults."  They are not limited to Trinity members.  If you see a topic that really appeals to you, you are welcomed to that class with open arms.

If you would share your vocal music talents, the members of Trinity--not to mention the Adult Choir--really appreciate your participation in the Choir which rehearses during the Study Hour on Wednesday evening.

Do you like kids?  Is one of your gifts the ability to communicate with them?  Do you get a warm feeling of pleasure when you see a youngster master a new skill  or catch on to a concept that you have taught them?  If so, you might find a place as a helper in the Wednesday night children's or youth programs.
